Our Mission and Charism Our History Our Spirituality

The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor are an international/multi-cultural religious congregation founded in 1845 by Blessed Frances Schervier in Aachen, Germany. We minister in Brazil, Italy, the Philippines, Senegal, and the United States.

About our Congregation.

Our ministries include health care, spiritual & pastoral care, and social service with abused women and children, those who are homeless and persons with AIDS. We are also involved in retreat ministry and spiritual direction. As religious women in the Roman Catholic Church, the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor follow a Gospel way of life through public vows of consecrated celibacy, poverty and obedience in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and Blessed Frances Schervier, foundress of the Congregation.

In carrying out the mission of Jesus, Frances Schervier saw Christ in the poor and desired to heal His wounds; that is the very core of being a Franciscan Sister of the Poor.

The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor offer their talents and resources entirely to God for the creative healing of women, men and children in need.
